Operation Easter Crackdown On Wildlife Crime In Caithness
Operation Easter is an annual UK wide operation run by all Police forces
and the RSPB targeting persons who commit offences against wild birds by
disturbing their nests and stealing their eggs. The operation runs from
Easter until the end of the nesting season.
The county of Caithness has a number of rare bird species which nests
here, which are of importance both nationally and internationally in terms
of their rarity. The RSPB has reserves in the county at Dunnet Head,
Broubster Means and Forsinard which straddles the Sutherland / Caithness
county line. The RSPB warden, Dave Jones stated: “The RSPB in Caithness
with it’s two reserves fully support Operation Easter and ask the public
to keep their eyes open during this important time for breeding wild
birds.”
If anyone is seen acting suspiciously either at or near to known wild bird
nesting sites or elsewhere then the public should contact either Wick or
Thurso Police Station immediately with any of the following information:
-
The time of the incident
-
An accurate location is very helpful
-
Number of individuals involved
-
What they are doing
-
What they are wearing, start at the head and work down
-
If there is a vehicle, the registration, make and colour if possible
-
If the suspects have left the location, their direction of travel
This information greatly assists the Police in tracing these people and or
their vehicles quickly. The wildlife crime officer for Caithness,
Constable 563 Cailean Macleod said: Caithness has been targeted by
criminals from all over the UK involved in disturbing wild bird’s nests
and stealing their eggs. The assistance of the community in reporting any
suspicious persons or vehicles, is of vital importance in order to protect
Caithness’s wild birds for future generations and for tourists and locals
alike.”
The Police in Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross are working closely
with gamekeepers, countryside rangers, conservation organisations, farmers
and other people working the countryside to tackle all forms of wildlife
crime. On behalf of the gamekeepers, Alex Hogg, chairman of the Scottish
Gamekeepers Association said: “Stalkers and gamekeepers know the remote
areas of our countryside better than anyone and are ideally placed to help
the police in their campaign against egg collectors. Because our work
takes us out of doors at all times of the day and night our members are
regularly able to contribute to this ongoing operation.”
Members of the community can use Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 to pass
information anonymously to Police or contact Thurso or Wick Police

Dangerous Ice On Lochs and Streams
Wick Police are reminding people of the dangers of playing or venturing
onto iced over lochs and streams after attending a report of youths
playing on the iced over surface of Loch Watten, Caithness on the 9th
February 2009.
Due to the current icy conditions, ice has covered over many lochs and
streams across Caithness however the dangers of playing or venturing onto
this ice can’t be over emphasised enough as it is unlikely to support the
weight of a child or adult and could result in a serious incident.

Lost Property - Surf Board - If Spotted Notify Police Immediately
Police in Thurso have received a report that a group of surfers lost a
pink and white surf board while the group were surfing at Strathy beach on
the afternoon of Wednesday 21st January 2009. The board was seen floating
out to sea and could not be recovered without endangering the safety of
members of the group. There is a very real possibility that the board
might eventually be washed ashore or spotted out at sea, which might
prompt a missing person enquiry. It should be emphasised that the usual
full enquiries would be carried out in the event of the finding/recovery
of any surf boards, until such time as it could be substantiated that any
recovered surf boards were a definite match for the one lost at Strathy
and would request that this information be borne in mind should such an
incident occur.
