Medieval Urban Archaeology

Demolition of the older parts of Wick and Thurso, like similar work in many other Scottish towns of medieval date, might give archaeologists a chance to recover evidence of the early origins of those burghs. In an attempt to draw the attention of local authorities to the possible complete destruction during redevelopment of areas of archaeological significance the Medieval Urban Archaeology Committee of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, with the cooperation of the Scottish Development Department has recently appointed area consultants to coordinate rescue work on sites undergoing redevelopment. The consultant for the Caithness and Sutherland area is Mr. J. Bramman and the national convener is Dr. Grant Simpson of the Department of History in the University of Aberdeen.
