VISITING STUDENTS

We are hosting two teaching students and a Nursery student for the remainder of this term and next term. Miss Inrig will be teaching in P2 and P4 and Miss Risbridger will be teaching in P5. Miss Allan will be working with Nursery staff 4 days a week.

NURSERY PLAY WORKSHOPS

Thank you to the parents who came along to the play workshop in the Nursery, I think everyone who attended enjoyed their evening. Thank you too to the Nursery staff for preparing and presenting the workshop.

NURSERY COFFEE MORNING

Well done to the Nursery who raised almost £80 for the CLIC charity by holding their Yummy Mummy Coffee Morning last week. Thank you to all the Yummy Mummies/Grannies /Aunties and even Dads who supported their fundraising effort. There was a lovely atmosphere in the hall and I’m sure the children enjoyed having you in school.

TUCK SHOP FOR PRIMARY ONE

Primary One pupils can use the school tuck shop after the October holidays. Attached is an up to date price list of snacks available from the tuck shop. In addition to these children can buy toast and fruit from the kitchen at interval.

HEALTH PROMOTING SCHOOL ACCREDITATION VISIT

We had our Health Promoting School accreditation visit last week and were awarded a level 4 which is the highest level possible. Our Accreditation Officer, Colin Ferguson was very impressed by the children and by the effort we all make to make the best of our school. Thank you to the parents who came along and chatted to Mr Ferguson in the Parents’ Room and to those of you who made him welcome at the Nursery Coffee Morning.

P3 PAIRED READING

If any P3 parents are interested in coming along to the Paired Reading workshops on Wednesday afternoons please contact the school office to make the necessary arrangements. Response to the workshops has been poor this session and we still have spaces left.

APPROPRIATE SCHOOL CLOTHING

Can I please appeal to parents to ensure children wear appropriate clothing to school. I realise the fashion at the moment is for hipster style trousers however they are totally inappropriate when sitting on low school chairs or on the floor as we end up with a row of exposed bottoms! Long baggy trousers are also a concern as once children are changed into gym shoes these are a trip hazard. With so many sets of stairs in the school this can be very dangerous.

WALK TO SCHOOL WEEK

Thank you to everyone who walked to school this morning – especially those of you who don’t usually. Please remember tomorrow is our Walk Together Morning. We will all meet in

Mrs McKechnie’s garden (5 Oldfield Terrace) at 8.30am and walk together to school using the route where we hope to establish a zebra crossing.

TERM ONE CHARITY - CLIC AND THE ROALD DAHL FOUNDATION

Just a reminder that children can guess how many books will be read in school this week for 50p a guess. P7 will collect the guesses at tuck time. All monies raised will go to CLIC and the Roald Dahl Foundation. There will be a prize of a £5 book token for the winning guess.

BLUE PETER COLLETION

Thank you to everyone who has contributed bags of clothing to this appeal. We have given 42 bags of clothing so far! We will be putting the last bags to the Red Cross on Friday 7 October so if you have any unwanted children’s clothing in good condition please pop them in a bag and send it to school. Let’s see if we can reach 50 bags by the end of the week.

Open meeting with mrs farmer

Unfortunately no parents attended the first open meeting. I do however intend to persevere with this activity as comments from parents and responses in questionnaires suggest some parents do have questions they would like to discuss. I would like to put forward two items for discussion at the next meeting:-

· School Development Plan

· Health Programme of Work

The next meeting will be held in the Parents’ Room on Wednesday, 2 November at 3.15 pm.

SCHOOL NUTRITION ACTION GROUP

The new snacks for Tuck have proven to be a great success. At the moment we are going through a pack of digestives and at least a pack of Rice Cakes every day. Well done to the SNAG for a great idea!

PUPIL COUNCIL

The Pupil Council have been extremely busy already this term. They have organised the purchase of a small fridge to be used to store water which is sold at Tuck. They have also greatly improved the appearance of the Tuck Shop by buying a new tuck trolley.

The pupil rep.s from the SNAG – Rachael Canavan and Michaela Cameron – approached the Pupil Council to ask the council to help them establish an outdoor eating area. The Pupil Council felt this was a good idea and have agreed to pay for two picnic benches.

LLOYDS TSB - NOTE FOR NOTE

Please note Lloyds TSB have stopped this initiative. Thank you to any parents who may have taken up the offer.

MENUS

When we return after the October break the menus will start at week 1. Please remember the school meal price is £1.50.

PTA NEWS

The next PTA event will be the Hallowe’en Fayre. Information regarding this will be issued by the PTA shortly.

Copies of PTA minutes are available on the school website and also on the notice board outside the office. The next PTA meeting will be held at 6.30pm on Thursday 6, October.

SCHOOL BOARD

Congratulations to Alice Fidler (Jack P5, Rosie P3, Laura P1), the winner of the School Board Prize Draw for the month of September. Copies of School Board minutes are available on the school website and also on the notice board outside the office. The next meeting will be held at 7.00 pm on Monday, 14 November.

TRADITIONAL MUSIC WORKSHOPS

Christine Russell, Cultural Co-ordinator for Schools has asked me to distribute the attached information sheet and application form for the next weekend of music workshops organised by Wick Traditional Music. This will take place in Wick High School on Saturday 5th November. The workshops are a fantastic opportunity for young learners of music to spend a day of tuition with some of the Highlands’ most respected professional traditional musicians. Apart from absolute beginners, the day is designed to cope with a range of ability, and there’s a concert at the end of the day to draw everything together.

COLLECTION ITEMS

We continue to collect:

· Items for Blue Peter Appeal – clean clothes in good condition, no shoes

· Empty ink cartridges.

· Stamps

· Persil Stars

· Nestle Box Tops
