South School Newsletter No. 1
9 September 2002

Dear Parent/ Guardian,

My apologies for not writing to you all before now but what a hectic start to the new academic year! We have had a number of tradesmen in during the summer holidays doing a variety of jobs and I felt we were in bit of a mess initially, still we’re getting there for now! They do say, “Rome wasn’t built in a day!”
All children have had a very settled start to their new classes - the Nursery children are enjoying the range of activities and P1 will soon be in for the whole day!

New Community School
We are part of this new initiative and have benefited from extra funding to establish a Pupil Support Base (P.S.B.) within the school - this has meant that our music room has been transformed to encompass the needs of such a base alongside some reorganisation to the open area (outside P4 - P7) and the present support room.  The P.S.B. will be used by different agencies to support the differing children’s needs within the school. Once it is complete then you will receive an invitation to come and see for yourselves!

National Identity & Ethnicity
There is another letter and form along with this Newsletter, please complete and send it back to school before this Friday. The information is required for a census return.

Family Update forms
These forms were issued last week - please make sure you have made the necessary changes and returned it so that our computer records are updated.  Please inform us of any changes during the year - telephone numbers are VITAL, we may need to contact you in an emergency!

Medicines
If you require your child to take any form of medicine in school then you must discuss this with myself - any child who suffers from asthma must have a spare inhaler kept in school. Forms need to be completed to ensure the correct administration.

Gym
Your child will inform you when they have P.E. lessons. Please ensure that your child brings shorts and a t-shirt on those days. Can I please remind you that jewellery must not be worn for any P.E. activity? (This includes swimming.)

Uniform
I’m delighted that nearly 100% of children are wearing uniform. Please continue to encourage your child to wear the school uniform with pride - it really shows an identity within school and the community. A number of children in Nursery are wearing the new t-shirt. Maura, now in P7, designed the logo. These can be bought from the school office at a cost of £5.

Nursery Fence
It would be great if we could have a number of volunteers to help us paint the Nursery fence - if you have some spare time please contact myself and we can organise a time to suit us all!

Primary 1 information
The class photograph by Mrs Macdonald is now on display outside the P1 classroom.  They can be ordered at the school office - cost £5. Payment must be made at time of order. Bill Fernie took a more informal photograph and this can be viewed on the caithness.org website.

Primary 1 will be full-time as from next week. If your child goes home for lunch - they will leave school at 12.15pm and need to return for 1.30pm. School finishes at 3.15pm.

Please inform Mrs Hourston if your child is to walk home on their own.

Parent Teacher Association
The A.G.M. will be held on Wednesday 18th September 2002 at 6.30pm in the School Hall. Please come along - your support is absolutely vital.

Triathlon
This event takes place on Sunday 15th September at Wick High School for pupils in P4 -P7. Further information will follow, if your child is involved in a team.

Healthy Approach
The school continues to promote healthy eating in the tuck shop - we have added a few new items. Still mineral water at 25p and fruit bars at 30p.  Potato crisps are still available at 25p, boxes of raisins at 10p, fresh fruit (priced at 10p or 15p) and cartons of pure fruit juice at 20p. Please continue to encourage your child to eat healthier and start each day with breakfast.

Please contact me for any further information or if you have any concerns.

Kind regards,

Pat Bowers - Headteacher
