THE FACTS
FROM 1 SEPTEMBER 1999 the Government is introducing a new right tp paid time off for study or training for young people who:
  • are employees;
  • are aged 16-17;
  • are not in full time education and
  • have got few, if any educational qualifications whilst at school or college.
What kind of training can I do?
You can study or train for a nationally recognised qualification which helps you improve your employment prospects (with your current or a future employer).

You can study or train where you work, at college, with another employer or training provider or elsewhere.

Must I have been in my job for a certain time before I have this right?
No.  There is no qualifying period.

How much time off work can i have to study or train?
The amount will vary depending on the requirements of your study or training and the circumstances of your employer.

What if I reach 18 and I have not yet finished my qualification?
If you started when aged 16 or 17 you have the right to finish whilst you are 18.

Will I be paid for any time i spend away from my job?
Yes.  You will be entitled to your usual hourly rate.

Does it matter if I work for a small employer?
No.  You have the right to paid time off whatever the size of your employer's business.

What if my employer refuses?
You can complain to an employment tribunal.  You can get advice from your local Citizen's Advice Bureau, Law Centre, a solicitor or your trade union.
