THURSO IN BLOOM

Scottish Charity No. SC0131337

Keen to encourage further interest in out organisation, Thurso In Bloom, we have decided to update our website, now a recognised Scottish Charity. Thurso in Bloom was founded in February 2000 by public- spirited people with a strong sense of civic pride and is open to the “like- minded”, including under- 16 - year olds. Initially to encourage local folk to brighten up Thurso by providing hanging baskets and other local floral displays for the benefit of residents and visitors.

2001 was a very busy year and despite the inclement weather, the floral displays added colour to the town. Thurso was awarded a Commendation Certificate in the “Beautiful Scotland In Bloom” competition, the judges comments giving us pointers as to our “shortcomings”.

With even more involvement and co-operation of other local organisations, we are hoping to improve our standing in this year’s competition.

Included in our various fund-raising activities last year, were very successful Primary School Disco’s (for two separate age groups) held on the 14th December - hard work but well worth it!! -a Thrift Shop and Coffee Morning in May, stalls at both the Gala Harbour Night and the Janet Street Fair, to mention only a few.

For 2002 we are already planning various projects - not only floral displays - endeavouring to include in the community at large. Indeed, the three Primary Schools are currently participating in a “Spring Bulbs” competition, which we hope will become an annual event. A trophy for presentation to the winning school having already been received from a public-spirited member of the public. Whilst another member of the public is to provide a trophy to be presented to the winner of yet another “new” (and hopefully annual) competition involving the best hanging basket/ best house frontage - the details have still to be decided.

The need for funds and funding is always ongoing and we are extremely grateful to all individuals, organisations, and business etc. that so willingly come to are assistance. We are hoping to encourage sponsorship of hanging baskets, Thurso In Bloom stickers acknowledging the sponsored support being provided. Requests for yearly pledges of financial assistance, irrespective of amount, are being proposed, as also a sponsored cycle run and - really looking ahead - a 2003 calendar!!

Obviously we are thinking positively and are hopeful that are endeavours to present Thurso at it’s best will generate not only interest and perhaps ideas for future projects, but financial support from near and far.

Further information can be obtained from contacting Thurso In Bloom at 1 Brabster Street, Thurso Caithness, KW14 7AP, or by Fax on 01847 893854.
