In April 1991 a carers
group for those looking after someone with dementia was started in
Thurso an a need was quickly identified for specialised day care.
The Thurso Branch of Alzheimer Scotland was then formed in December 1991
and in January 1992 a steering group was set up to work towards the
provision of day care which was then started in July 1993.
In December 1995 the project moved into "The
Couthie Corner" -new purpose built premises leased from Social Work
Department and located within Bayview House, Thurso. This
has allowed expansion of the services provided.
Who can attend?
The project covers the area of West Caithness approximately
from Mey to Reay along with corresponding inland areas. those who
attend should have a diagnosis of dementia or have symptoms which are
being investigated with the likelihood of dementia being the diagnosis.
Not all people with dementia may be suitable for day care E.G. if they
have severe behavioural problems so after the initial referral the
project co-ordinator will visit to discuss what is most suitable for the
individual.
Day care attendance is regularly reviewed to ensure that the needs of
the individual continue to be met as much as possible. At times
this may mean that day care attendance is no longer appropriate but this
will be fully discussed with all concerned in the person's care.
Referrals
These can come from a variety of sources e.g.direct referral by
family or other carers, GP's, hospitals, community psychiatric nurses,
social work staff, district nurses, voluntary agencies etc.
Numbers of attenders
Up to 10 people with dementia can be accommodated in each
session.
Where is it held?
In a purpose built unit leased from the Social Work department
within Bayview House, Thurso.
Times of Attendance
Day care is available at present from approximately 10am to 4pm
on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. As the service
aims to be "needs led " however these times may change to meet
differing situations.
Staff
There is a full time day care manager and part time care staff
to ensure a minimum of 2 paid staff members on duty at all times.
Volunteers are also an invaluable part of the team. They receive a
basic training and help us to try to achieve our ideal of one to one
care.
Charges
A small daily charge is made to cover lunch (which is supplied
from Bayview House) and cups of tea etc.
Activities
A variety of activities are available to suit the needs and
abilities of those attending to provide stimulation and a sense of
usefulness and purpose. Activities include reminiscence, quizzes,
floor games, outings, domestic activities, crafts etc. These
are done in group settings or individually bearing in mind the wishes of
the person and their likes and dislikes.
There is also plenty of opportunity just to chat over a cup of tea and
the newspaper or rest if desired.
Feedback
This can be done informally through the transport escort or by
phone or visit to/from the project staff on a day to day basis or more
formally at regular reviews if necessary.
Carer Support
This can be done individually by telephone or visit or through
the twice monthly carers groups which are run by the project.
Support is not only available to those involved in day care but to all
those with dementia at any stage in the illness. All those who are
caring whether directly or indirectly at present or have done so in the
past and whose relatives/friends are now in permanent care or have died
are also welcome to contact the project.
Raising Public Awareness
This is pursued through meetings and supplying speakers etc.
Information
This is available through literature and personal advice.
Training
Training is available to individuals and groups on issues concerning
dementia, the disease itself and the needs of carers of those with
dementia.
Volunteers
Volunteers are always welcome to assist in day care,
transporting or fundraising. all day care volunteers have to
supply basic references due to the nature of the work. Basic
training is provided.
Complaints Procedure
If problems arise with any aspect of our service and the matter
cannot be dealt with by informal discussion there is a complaints form
available to make written notice of the complaint which will be
investigated and a written reply made within 28 days.
