Thurso Bowling Club Starts 2005 Season In Glorious Sunshine
Members and guests of Thurso Bowling Club welcomed the new bowling season on Saturday 23rd April at the Millbank Road club amidst glorious Opening Day sunshine.

Club President Vic Dable in his opening speech thanked the excellent work of the green keeping staff and the dedication given by the few volunteers that gave their time to the maintenance of the club over the closed season. The President's wife Carmen Dable was then presented with a bouquet of flowers donated by Noble's of Thurso before throwing the opening jack of the 2005 season. The afternoon Helter Skelter was keenly contested over 5 rinks but the 6th rink of Harry Cormack, Bob Campbell, Judy Mowat and Colin Mackintosh won easily and received a bottle of wine each. Liz Rhodes picked up a bottle of Bucks Fizz after getting the first toucher of the afternoon.

Last year the club held an Invitational Junior Masters Competition that was described by Boyce Mcleod (President of Scottish Bowling Association) as one of the best competitions he had attended all year, even surpassing that of last years World Bowls Championship at Ayr. Following on from that success the event is to be held annually and once again North of Scotland Newspapers is to be the main sponsors of the event that carries a prize pot of One Thousand Pounds. Entries for this year's competition are already flooding in and if the standard of play is anywhere near that of last year a great weekend of bowling is to be expected. Meanwhile, District ties for the Gents Scottish Championships are due to get underway shortly.

The Thurso Club also hopes to field a strong contingent in this years Top Ten Competition. Last year the club lost out in a keenly contested final against Fraser Park (Inverness) and will be hoping to go one step further and bring the trophy home to Caithness this season.

Three of the Thurso Club's Members have been selected to play this year for the 32-man squad of the Northern Counties Bowling Team that compete for the prestigious Hamilton Trophy. Darren Miller, Andrew Buttress and Brian Cormack. Good luck to them.

Across the county two of the other three counties clubs also held their opening day. St Fergus (Wick) and the Lybster Outdoor Bowling Club. Rosebank (Wick) will be holding their Opening Day on Saturday 30th April at the Thurso Road Club.
