UKAEA has appointed Barry Shine, most recently Deputy Chief Financial Officer of Thus plc (Scottish Telecom), to a new post of Deputy Finance and  Commercial Director. Barry will take up his new post on 14 February.

UKAEA's business is to manage the decommissioning and environmental restoration of nuclear sites from Dounreay, Scotland to Winfrith in Dorset.  It is also responsible for the UK's contribution to the fusion energy development programme. UKAEA is a Government body with an annual turnover of 286 million, the majority of which is spent on competitively tendered contracts for nuclear decommissioning work.

A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, Barry (51) worked at Cable and Wireless plc from 1971 until 2000 in a variety of business roles including Chief Financial Officer for Cable and Wireless Marine Ltd until it was sold into the Global Crossing Group. For two years he was seconded to the Optus Communications Group in Australia.

UKAEA Finance and Commercial Director, Paul White, commented, "Barry has a wealth of experience in the technology and contracting fields in the public and private sector. This experience will be invaluable in the next few years as UKAEA prepares for changes proposed by the Government, including the formation of a Liabilities Management Authority to oversee the UK's nuclear liabilities."
