Dounreay - Past Present Future
As already mentioned, UKAEA has its own trained constabulary who provide security services for both UKAEA and BNFL sites around the country and has special responsibility for the protection of nuclear materials.
A new police command and control centre is on the site.
Dounreay has its own full-time fire brigade and ambulance service on site for emergencies and the staff are also closely involved in safety training on the site.
Next to the fire station is the dosimetry section. Regular checks are carried out on members of staff working in areas where radiation levels may be above normal. Everyone who works in an ‘active’ area is required to wear a ‘film’ badge’ which records the level of dose staff receive on a regular basis.
The Occupational Health Department provides a comprehensive health and advice service to all members of staff on the site including regular check-ups and medical assistance in the event of accidents or injuries.
