HOW TO GET STARTED IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS

Anyone thinking about a career in the music business will have the chance to find out how to get started at a series of Highlands and Islands workshops tied in with the upcoming Proclaimers tour.

Unlike TV shows like Popstars or Fame Academy, the 'Get Into Music' workshops have been designed to be just as relevant to those interested in working behind the scenes - in recording, production or distribution for example - as they are for budding performers.

Music industry professionals will be on hand at seven venues - in Rothesay, Skye, Lewis, Ross-shire, Caithness, Orkney and Shetland - to meet and advise people interested in breaking into the business and developing a career.

Participants in each two-to-three hour Get Into Music event will be able to put questions to a music industry panel, find out about training needs and opportunities, receive one-to-one advice and take part in a technical workshop.

Just as importantly, they will be invited to put forward their own views about what kinds of further assistance they would like to be offered.  The partners behind the initiative include musicians, independent record companies, concert promoters, trainers and development agency Highlands and Islands Enterprise.  Panellists at the workshops will represent Highlands and Islands Labels (HAIL); festival organisers goNORTH; Music Industry Development and Support (MIDAS); the Performing Rights Society; specialist training firm Armstrong Learning; the Musicians Union, and the Mechanical Copyright Protection Society.

Participation is free.  More information is available on the internet at www.getintomusic.com
