DAVID WEATHERS THE STORM AT LYBSTER GOLF CLUB'S 2004 OPEN

Despite the atrocious weather conditions, 39 hardy soles braved the wind and rain at Lybster Golf Club to participate in the 2004 Men's Open.

Best scratch score of the day was achieved David Nicolson, who seemed oblivious to the bad weather by returning an amazing score of 63 (4) 59, which sees him return to a handicap of 3. Next best were Eric Larnach and John Gunn, who both returned scores of 68.

According to club captain, Alex Calder, "It was great to see so many visitors from neighbouring clubs on such a terrible day. Obviously it was disappointing that first time visitors, including a couple of lads who travelled up from Brora, didn't get to see the course in better weather, but all the clubs represented featured in the prize list. Hopefully they will all come back for our Open Texas Scramble when we will surely get better weather."

Results were as follows: Scratch - D Nicolson, 63; E Larnach, 68; J Gunn, 68; J Munro, 70; L Parnell (Reay), 70; G Calder (Thurso), 72. Best overall net - J Munro, 70 (9) 61. Category 1 - L Parnell (Reay), 70 (6) 64; J Gunn, 68 (4) 64. Category 2 - R Maclean (Brora), 81 (18) 63; G Mellor (Wick), 90 (27) 63. 'Nearest the Pin' - John Gunn.

The Open Texas Scramble, which is sponsored by Sandison's, takes place at Lybster this Saturday (3rd July). It is a walk-on competition open to teams of 3 - men, ladies or mixed.
