Young Farmers Speech Making Competition
The Scottish Association of Young Farmers' North Region held their 2006 Junior Speechmaking Elimination and Regional Quiz Finals on Sunday the 27th of November at the Thurso Town Hall, Caithness.

The format for the Junior Speechmaking Elimination was Chairman, Opposer and Proposer with teams from the East Aberdeenshire District to Orkney District. The top honours, for the second year running, went to Harray YFC from Orkney District represented by Graham Tullock, Charles Copland, and Garry Hamilton. In second place was East Mainland YFC, also from Orkney District, with Peter Moss and sisters Laura and Kathryn Banks. Bower YFC from Caithness District took third place with Helen Ryrie, Laura Sandison, and Mey Erridge.

The prizes Outwith the Winning Team where won by the three members of the East Mainland YFC team. Best Chairman was Peter Moss, Best Proposer was Laura Banks, and Best Opposer was Kathryn Banks.

Following the Junior Speechmaking Competition was the Brains of the North Quiz sponsored by Harbro Limited. Competing for the two places in the Final where Belhelvie JAC, Inverurie YFC, Lower Speyside YFC, Starthspey YFC, Watten YFC, and Halkirk YFC.

The top two teams from the Semi-Final where Belhelvie JAC with 109 points, represented by Caroline Davidson, Philippa Knowles, Stuart Jamieson, and George Jamieson. With 99 points, was Inverurie YFC represented by Mark Ingram, Duncan Morrison, Denise Forsyth, and John Penman. In the finals, Belhelvie JAC kept their top position with a total of 63 points.

The top three Junior Speechmaking teams and the top Brains of the North team have been invited to represent the North Region at National Level. The 2006 National Junior Speechmaking Competition will be held at Craigie College in Ayr on Saturday 7th January 2006, and the National Quiz Finals will be held as part of the February competitions weekend in Oban.
