Behavioural Patterns of Drug Users In Highland

4.11. HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C

In the last section of the interview, respondents were asked some questions related to HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.

Respondents were first asked about any behaviour changes they had made since first hearing about AIDS or hepatitis. Sixty-six (86.8%) claimed they had taken steps to avoid becoming infected with HIV. Of these, the most common response was a reduction in sharing behaviour reported by 59 (89.4%). Other behaviour changes included increased condom use (8, 12.1%).

Finally, respondents provided information about any tests they had undergone for HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. The frequency and results for each of these tests are tabulated below in table 13.

Table 13. Results of previous HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C tests (n = 76).

Have been tested Positive Negative Unknown Non response

No positive results for HIV were reported, although 2 of those who said they had been tested did not know their result. Forty-four reported that they had been tested for hepatitis B, one had tested positive and four did not know their result. Of the fifty (65.8%) tested for hepatitis C, twelve had a positive result, 6 did not know their result and one did not divulge their result.

Twenty-eight (36.8%) injectors reported having been immunised against hepatitis B with 19 (25%) having completed the course of three primary immunisations. Fifteen respondents had had their immunisations at H.M.Prison Porterfield, 2 at H.M.Prison Corton Vale and 3 at Raigmore Hospital.

Of those who stated that they had tested positive for hepatitis C 2 were receiving treatment for their infection, 7 were not in receipt of treatment and 3 did not respond to this question.
