VISITING PE TEACHER SOUGHT FOR CAITHNESS

Following concerns expressed to him by Caithness members regarding the lack of PE cover in the Caithness area, Bruce Robertson, The Highland Council’s Director of Education Culture and Sport Services confirmed he has asked officials in the area to seek out a long term temporary teacher of PE for Caithness primary schools. The teacher would remain in post until the end of the school session in June 2003.

Mr Robertson said: “I agree that it is unacceptable for primary schools to get only one visit per month from a PE specialist and this will bring matters back to the position we had before the last teacher resigned.

“We are completing a review of visiting specialist provision across the whole of The Highland Council area and the results of this review will be presented to the Council in due course. In the meantime, I am happy to confirm that I have asked my staff in Caithness to try to find a suitable teacher but this may prove to be difficult because of the shortages in specialist teachers we are experiencing in some parts of the Highlands at present. We will pull out all the stops to try to restore provision to the pre-summer 2002 levels.”

The post will be advertised in the press following the October school holidays.
