LOCAL CHILDREN ALL SET TO LAUNCH
BRAND NEW TESCO STORE
Staff at the brand new Tesco superstore in Wick are all set to celebrate the stores official launch next Monday (27th November) with a special cheque donation to a local children’s centre.

Store manager Charlie Burness will be presenting the £1000 donation on behalf of the ‘Tesco Charity Trust’ to teacher Mrs Kay Scott and children from Caithness Early Years Autism Centre, who will be guests of honour at the store launch to cut a ribbon and declare the new store officially open.

Caithness Early Years Autism Centre, which opened in 2000, exists to provide the best possible day care and education for children with autism in the area with youngsters travelling as far away as Reay, Dunbeath and Canisbay.

CEYAC works in partnership with families, carers, professionals and authorities to provide positive support and services for children with autism.

Principal teacher at CEYAC, Pauline Pearson said: “This funding is a great boost to our centre. Fundraising and donations help to ensure our pupils continue to receive the best possible care and education.

“We are very grateful for Tesco’s support and wish them every success with their brand new store.”

Store manager Charlie Burness said: “It was a unanimous decision that this important community service was supported and we are delighted that the children from CEYAC have accepted our invitation to launch our store and are pleased that we have been able to make a donation to such a worthy cause”.

This is just one of the many donations being made by individual Tesco stores to local schools, community programmes and charities across the UK.

Other local community projects being supported by Charlie and his staff at Tesco Wick over the coming weeks will include, ‘The Pulteneytown Peoples Project’, ‘Wick Youth Club’ and ‘Wick Lifeboat’.

Charlie continued: “Here at Tesco Wick we are hoping to become a strong force within our community and we hope our customers and indeed local people, will agree with our choices.”

Tesco Building 'Green' Scottish Store At Wick                Tesco in ship to store transfer
- BBC
Supermarket giant Tesco says it has cut pollution by using a ship to transport building materials to its new 'green' store in the north of Scotland. Tesco used the ship to transport 1,500 tonnes of materials from Grangemouth to the site of its latest venture in Wick.

Steel For New Tesco Arriving At Wick - Thursday 31 August 2006

The 50,000 sq ft store uses a range of green technologies such as solar and wind power. Barr Construction, Tesco's builder, said the vessel would reduce vehicle emissions and ease road congestion. The construction firm will design and build Tesco's first eco store, which will have a timber rather than steel structure and will be opened later this year.

Rather than use 75 trucks to shift the floor tiles, roofing and timber the firm opted to use one ship which is due to arrive in Wick this week. Barclay Chalmers, Barr Construction's managing director, said: "This is the first time that we've used a ship to transport goods between two Scottish mainland sites and apart from being a slightly unorthodox way of doing so there are a number of obvious benefits associated with it.

"Not only will it help to cut down on the number of man hours, it will reduce emissions and ease congestion on the roads. When we first started work on the new eco store, Tesco asked that we look at how we would transport any materials to and from Wick. The supermarket chain was keen that everything associated with the building of its first eco store had a 'green' aspect to it."

Tesco said it recently unveiled a new strategy which includes cutting stores' energy usage and reducing deliveries to the chain's Express convenience stores, to help cut congestion.

Stuart Hay, head of policy at Friends of the Earth, said that the transfer of materials by water in a large ship could be energy efficient. He told the BBC Scotland news website: "In terms of energy saving, it does appear to make sense. On the continent, they move a lot of goods and construction materials on barges on rivers such as the Rhine. However, we still have mixed views about the whole idea of Tesco being a green company when you consider the wider picture."
