Kite CAM
Aerial Views Of Caithness With A Difference

Technical Data By Grant Golding
For anyone interested in how to take photos using a kite here is some information that might be useful.

Suppliers
http://www.brooxes.com  - or the European supplier - www.kapshop.com  a source for the camera rig in kit form.

Equipment
All that is needed after you have the kit is -

  • 4 channel Radio Gear, a camera and a single line kite.
  • The cost for a set up without a camera is around £180.
  • The main camera now is a Canon Ixus 800 - with shutter speeds of up to ISO800 and image stabilisers it is an excellent choice for good quality pictures.
  • With the Rig and Camera ready to go the weight is just under 1 1/2lb.
  • KAP needs a very stable single line kite, there are plenty of designs for all budgets but the best from value for money and usability is the Sutton FloForm 16. It will lift the rig in winds from 10 - 25mph of wind but it needs fuzzy tails to keep it stable.
  • The other kite that I use is a 2 metre Rokkaku Kite, this is a traditionally a Japanese fighting kite but the huge sail area means it has good pull in light winds.
  • Other useful kites are single line deltas - www.deltakites.com
