Voluntary Sector Conference Comes To Scotland In 2006
The world's biggest civic and voluntary sector conference is to come to Scotland for the first time, bringing around 1000 delegates from 100 countries around the globe.

First Minister Jack McConnell and the chief executive of CIVICUS Kumi Naidoo, today announced that the CIVICUS World Assembly is to be held in Glasgow in 2006 for an unprecedented three years in a row.

Speaking at The Gathering - Scotland's largest voluntary sector event, the First Minister said:

"I am delighted that CIVICUS is coming to Scotland. For ten years now the Assembly has been working to change lives by opening up opportunites for ordinary people to get involved in their communities. Now, as they look to the future, they have chosen our country to be at the heart of their work.

"Once again, we have shown that Scotland has what it takes to attract major events. The organisers have shown their faith in Glasgow by bringing the Assembly to the city for three years. Scotland will repay that faith."

Kumi Naidoo is also president of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAAP). Make Poverty History is the UK arm of GCAAP.

Previous cities to host CIVICUS include Budapest, Vancouver and Mexico City. In the past the event has been attended by such leading figures as the Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan.
