Local Distillers support for Raft Race

Inver House Distillers - owners of Old Pulteney Distillery, Wick have offered 2 cases of Whisky for use as prizes at this year’s Thurso Bay Raft Race.  Our sincere thanks to them.

Old Pulteney received a new lease of life in 1997 and now exports to 25 countries and continues to go from strength to strength.

On Monday 12th June glasses were raised at the distillery following the opening of a new visitor centre.  The centre is the first to be opened by Inver House Distillers and will offer visitors to Wick a centre where they can learn about the whisky industry.

Thurso Bay Raft Race
1999

Thurso Bay Raft Race was again a great success with a large amount of money being raised for local worthy causes.

The windy conditions, at times gusting up to force 5, saw the usual Thurso to Scrabster Beach course about turned at the last minute. Not an ideal situation, but definitely the correct move on safety grounds. The strong back wind gave an added bonus to the thirteen rafts that started, making the ¾ mile course much easier and quicker than normal. It was no surprise then, that the race was completed in a new record time.

The quality of raft building for the race gets better as each year goes by, with all of the entries making it to the finish, even if one of them was minus a crew that had to be landed by one of the many safety boats at hand throughout the race.

Mr. Billy Farquhar, coxswain of the local lifeboat was this years guest starter who got the race off with a bang by firing a maroon, and in anticipation of a fast time the crowds of spectators quickly dashed to their cars and headed to Thurso beach and the finish line.

As the rafts came across the bay, it became clear that two of them were pulling away from the rest of the flotilla, and by the half way mark the eventual winner’s had pulled out an unassailable lead and cruised in 4 minutes ahead of their second place rivals.

This year’s Presentation dance was again held courtesy of Brian Cardosi, at Skinandi’s nightclub, Thurso, where the evening’s events went smoothly, with many guests enjoyed entertainment that included games, competitions and dancing.

Our special guest Mr. Rab Taylor, Chairman of the National Coastguard Association made the presentation of Trophies and cash prizes to all the winning entries.

Mr. Alistair Jack, local coordinator of British Divers Marine Life Rescue, accompanied by BDMLR local secretary Jonie Guest accepted a radar reflector for their new rescue vessel. One of the many presentations that are made possible annually from money raised at the raft race.

Yet again, we must thank Ian & Maureen Pearson of Glass creations, Thurso, for their continued support in supplying the overall trophy. As with previous years the trophy was a true work of art and a worthy prize to win.
