Melness Rescue Team and Thurso RNLB (HRH The Queen Mother) were alerted at 2.15pm on August 1st to a young boy who was adrift in an inflatable boat off a remote northern beach with limited access across rocky terrain. Pentland Coastguard Watch Manager Sue Nelson said. "This is one of the only times of year when people are able to access these beautiful and remote beaches. However, their remoteness, combined with the craggy coastline and off-shore winds today makes them very dangerous and people should be extremely cautious in the water, in this case, the boy was lucky that a passer-by had a mobile telephone and was able to reach coastguard. A local fishing boat offered assistance and rescued the 14yr old who had drifted 1 mile out. ********** Orkney coastguard and lifeboat teams were put to the test as part of a major cliff exercise, reported The Orcadian recently. Several teams were involved in the exercise which included Kirkwall lifeboat and the Sumburgh based coastguard rescue helicopter, Oscar Charlie. One team was airlifted from Kirkwall airport to the Head of Holland, east of Kirkwall, where two other teams were setting up rescue equipment. Earlier a dummy had been placed at the bottom of the cliff and had to be recovered. At the same time, Kirkwall RNLB was at sea, and two team members were airlifted by the helicopter and winched down onto the boat. Ian MacDonald, Pentland Coastguard said, the exercise was a great success and a credit to all those who took part. "It went extremely well," he said. "It was far better than I had anticipated. The timing was excellent and everything went according to plan." ********** During a ceremony held in the Nethercliffe Hotel, Wick, Wick auxiliary coastguard Margaret Briskham became only the second woman in Scotland to receive the coastguard service’s long-service medal. The medal which is awarded for 20 years’ service, was presented by Pentland Coastguard’s Kirkwall-based district officer, John Livitt. ********** Duncansby Cliff Rescue Team (CRT) member Dennis Farquhar from Dunnet, Caithness, recently received a bar to his long-service medal, marking 35 years service. The award was made at the Seaview Hotel, John O'Groats and was presented by John Livitt, District Controller from Pentland Coastguard. ********** Coastguard rescue
teams from Duncansby and Wick joined police, an RAF helicopter from
Lossiemouth and Wick RNLB to carry out a search of the coastline after a
bag containing expensive camera equipment was found hanging from a post
at Duncansby Head on Monday, June 12th. Fears were raised that the owner of
the bag may have fallen over the edge of the nearby steep cliffs. Local police have contacted Interpol and further enquiries are being made about the man’s whereabouts. UPDATE
