Wind Turbines Still Arriving At Wick For Causewaymire Wind Farm

24 March 04
How To Get A Wind Turbine Part Round The Cliff In Wick

A tricky set of manoeuvres is required to get the main wind turbine
parts round the very tight angle from the riverside to "The Cliff" in
Wick. Edward Mackay's drivers have now had plenty of practice on
this corner and this load was turned round with no problems. There
are still many parts awaiting shipment lying at Wick harbour and several
shiploads still to come as the wind farm at Causewaymire builds up.
Several other new wind farms are yet to begin operations in Caithness so
wind turbine parts on Caithness roads will be a common site over the
next couple of years.

WORK FINISHED AT LATEST SCOTTISH POWER WINDFARM
ScottishPower has announced the completion of the 35 turbine
Cruach Mhor windfarm in Argyll. The final turbine was erected
today bringing on 30MW of green energy, enough to power over
17,000 homes.
Speaking at the Scottish Renewables Forum, Deputy Enterprise
Minister Lewis Macdonald welcomed the announcement: "Cruach Mhor
is a fine example of the rural regeneration which can be brought
about by renewable energy projects. I am delighted that the
turbines were manufactured in Kintyre at the Vestas plant. This
contract represents around 15m (GBP) for the local economy.
"The completion of Cruach Mhor is anther important milestone in
our drive to develop 40 % of energy from renewable sources by
2020, and demonstrates that meeting our environmental
obligations can be done in a way which provides major economic
benefits to local economies."
The 8 month construction project has brought an estimated 15m (GBP)to
the Argyll economy including the 850KW turbines being
manufactured by Campbeltown's Vestas Celtic, which employs 200
people.
The project will now undergo a commissioning period before being
officially opened in the early summer.

Caithness Planning Committee Give Go Ahead For Anemometer Mast At
Sandside
Application for the new mast was granted at the meeting of the
Caithness Europe Planning and Development committee on Monday.
the 50 meter mast was granted planning permission for two years and
will be sited 4kilmeters south and east of the A836.
Objections were received from Caithness West Community Council and
the RSPB. An objection from Scottish Natural Heritage was
removed by them when the applicants supplied a survey of natural
heritage interests. Arguments about Wind Farms were rejected as the
application was not for a wind farm. Not all masts lead ultimately
to an application for one.

Latest Listing Of Wind Farms
Developments in Highland
Several changes have taken place since the last list was posted in
July 2003. There have been some refusals of planning
permission and new schemes coming forward.
Although this section has not covered the topic in detail it may be
well to point out that in addition to wind power there are several
new hydro schemes already approved and more at various stages
- none o these are in Caithness and only one in Assynt

Economics of Renewable Energy
A report by IPA Energy Consulting, in association with Brodies, has
been commissioned by Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar and The Highland
Council, to provide the two councils with an economic evaluation of
a range of alternative renewable energy developments – onshore wind,
offshore wind, hydro electric and wave/tidal technologies. It is
designed to provide the councils with an understanding of the
potential financial value of such projects, which the councils may
consider as an input into their deliberations on the issue of
community benefits. It provides an overview of the economics of
renewable energy developments, followed by an detailed analysis of
seven sample developments, each of different technology and/or size.
The report will be considered, in the first instance, by The
Highland Council's Sustainable Development Select Committee on
Wednesday 14 January 2004.

Crofters Commission Turns Down Wind Farm Developer
Charles Sutherland has had an application to decroft land at
Shebster turned down by the Crofters Commission. Mr Sutherland
who runs a garage business in Reay wants to build 25 wind-turbines
on rough land. There were three objectors and a petition
signed by over 100 people objecting to the proposed development and
decrofting the land for this purpose. The Crofters Commission also
pointed out that Mr Sutherland did not as yet have planning
permission which is one of their requirements Mr Sutherland
say up to 30 people would be employed in the year long construction
phase and that benefits would be local as the wind farm would
be in local ownership. Mr Sutherland was also unhappy that Mr
Bill Ross who is one of the objectors and is also an assessor for
the Crofters Commission led evidence to the commission. This
fact is another that Mr Sutherland takes issue with. Other
objectors were Bill Brown for the Caithness West Community Council
and George MacDougall a private resident. Mr Sutherland claims
that many of the signatories to the petition are not resident in the
area.
