(Saturday 6th February) sees the annual Jobs and How to Get Them event, developed again by a group of agencies and organisations and managed by Caithness Chamber of Commerce. The event is being held between 10am and 2pm at Wick Assembly Rooms and is expected to feature more than 40 companies and support organisations in a range of sectors (energy, hospitality, uniformed services etc). A storm officially named Gertrude by the Met Office has been forecast to bring winds of up to 90mph as well as heavy rain, high tides, and snow to Scotland tomorrow. The severe winds and high tides are expected to hit the north and west of Scotland in particular. This is to advise that we will be withdrawing a limited number of train services as a safety precaution from the start of service tomorrow on routes likely to bear the brunt of the extreme weather.

Caithness Flag - winning design
A nordic cross and galley symbolising ancient ties to the Vikings are part of the winning design of the flag for Caithness. Councillor Gail Ross, Civic Leader of The Highland Council in Caithness unfurled the new at a Flag Order of Ceremony held in Wick Town Hall today. Councillor Ross thanks the John O'Groat Journal who had set the ball rolling to get a flag for Caithness. The Lord Lyon King of Arms and Caithness Members of The Highland Council were piped in to the ceremony by bagpiper Cllr David Bremner. School children from local Primaries and Secondaries, businesses and Community Council representatives also attended the Order of Ceremony Philip Tibbetts, of the Flag Institute and Dr Joseph Morrow, Lord Lyon King of Arms both gave an address to the accompanied guests.

Vintage Car Rally - John O'Groats To Monte Carlo
It is 90 years isnce the run from John O'Groats to Monte Carlo was last tackled.  Today about 30 vintage cars will get checked over at Keiss garage between 2.00pm and 6.00pm.  Drivers and passengers will attend a local Burns supper then tomorrow set off at 8.00am at about one minute intervals.

the Edge dance studio showcase is a massive success
Dancers at the Edge Studio, Thurso
The Edge Dance Studio in Thurso marked its 6 month opening with showcase performance at Mount Pleasant school on the 17th of December infront of a sell out crowd. Around 100 studio members, (kids from the age of 2 right up to adults) performed on the night, showcasing 11 different dance styles. A Prize Presentation followed the show in which each studio member was presented with a medal for their success over the past 6 months and winners were chosen from each weekly class. On the night the Top prize was the Edge Dance Studio Scholarship. The winner was Brooke Kay who now trains privately for free and gets the chance to represent the studio at major dancing events and competitions throughout Scotland.

More Money Comes From Scottish Government After Successful Event
Following the successful Public Participation event when local people decided which groups should share 30,000 Scottish government has added to the funds for more events that Caithness councillors agreed to hold.  Scottish government has sent word that they wil give 20,000 to match funds given locally by the council.  Councillors decided to hold two events in May and November making a total of 60,000 available - 30,000 at each event.

A few more deadlines for funding are now posted in the communcity section.
 
- projects that help children and young people experiencing illness, distress, abuse or neglect; any kind of disability; behavioural or psychological difficulties and / or living in situations of deprivation.
- CashBack got Communities is a partnership of six national, volunteer-led youth organisations. These are the Scout Association; Girlguiding Scotland; Boys Brigade; Girls Brigade in Scotland; Clubs for Young People (Scotland); and Youth Scotland.

North Lands Creative Glass Appoints New Artistic Director
Jeffrey Sarmiento apponted new Artistic Director of North Lands Creative Glass
The Board of North Lands Creative Glass is delighted to announce the appointment of Jeffrey Sarmiento as Artistic Director from 1 October 2016. He will succeed Emma Woffenden on the completion of her inspiring three-year term of office, culminating in North Lands 20, the anniversary celebration of its first master class and conference in 1996. Dr Sarmiento is currently Reader in Glass at the University of Sunderland, where he was awarded a PhD in 2011. Educated at the Rhode Island School of Design, he has worked internationally as a Fulbright Fellow in Denmark, a Visiting Artist at UrbanGlass, and an instructor at Pilchuck Glass School.

Many flood problems today in Caithness were being tackled by Council teams and the Fire Service with assistance from Police.  Amongst the areas affected were the basement of North Primary school had water problems. The brae behind Simpsons Oils had small collapse.  The footage in the film shows many of the places but there were many others with large and small isues over the night and morning.

The operator of a district heating scheme in Caithness that supplies the Pulteney Distillery is changing hands in a deal worth at least 4 million. Aim-quoted Ludgate Environmental Fund, which invests in “resource efficiency companies”, has agreed to sell Ignis Biomass to infrastructure investor and fund manager Equitix.
