This film is part of a series which examines stereotypical representations of women in games. Other topics in the series include the damsel in distress, where passive women must be rescued by male heroes, and the exotification of indigenous female characters through long-standing racist and sexist stereotypes. Anita Sarkeesian is a media critic and founder of the website Feminist Frequency. In 2009 she began producing online short films analysing popular culture through feminist critique. Tropes vs Women in Video Games followed in 2012 after a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to produce the series. It had a huge, immediate impact on the industry, illuminating many issues in videogame design and culture that contribute to negative portrayals of women. It helped lead to a reassess nt of the representation of women in videogames by high profile games studios and in the wider media.
