 The
name "Caithness" is an amalgamation of two reflections of its
early history. Namely Cait, a Pictish province and a Norse word ness
for promontory. The
county reflects its history in many of its place names. The influence of
Norse/Scandinavian, Anglo/Norman as well as Gaelic testify to the rich
diversity in a small area over the centuries. This diversity has been
handed on to many parts of the world as people from the north of
Scotland emigrated to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United states of
America. Many of the place names of Caithness are repeated with their
counterparts showing the need of original inhabitants in new lands to
have a reminder of their past both cultural and geographical. A small book is available from local
booksellers (See business index) giving much information on Caithness
places - Caithness - An Illustrated Architectural Guide by Elizabeth Beaton
The Rutland Press ISBN 873190 27 1 The guides are available on
